Thanks to its somewhat tumultuous political history, Latvia is a country with multiple influences: a little of the East and a little of the West with a whole lot of artistic flair. With just one big city (Riga), Latvia delights with its small towns and local charm. It flies under tourists’ radar but is surprisingly charming, with rambunctious live music, ornate architecture, and jealousy-inducing outdoor spaces. Plus, with nearly half the country covered by forests and national parks, it’s a nature lover’s paradise as well.

Latvia is generally colder year-round, with frigid winters. Summer has the best weather but is also peak tourist season. May and September are the best months to visit for mild temperatures and fewer crowds.
April – May: Springtime is still on the rainier and cooler side, but it’s a great time to visit for beautiful blooming flowers without the frigid cold of winter. May is usually a solid choice for decent weather and lower prices.
June – September: Summer is peak travel season in Latvia, with the best weather in July and August: around 70s and 80s Fahrenheit. Your best bet is to visit in early September, but you can get away with visiting in October if you don’t mind cooler temps.

Latvia’s location as a firm halfway point between Russia and the rest of Europe is reflected in its cuisine. The cuisine is not unlike that of its neighbors, with a focus on food that can be preserved to last through the winter: think pickled, smoked, and salted.
Latvians take rye bread seriously. It’s served with pretty much every meal and is arguably one of Latvia’s national dishes. I had no idea that rye bread came in different varieties, but it does in Latvia. Pickles in every form are another staple of Latvian food: I’m not just talking pickled cucumbers, either – vegetables of every variety are pickled in a variation of flavors and herbs, and you can easily sample them all at Riga’s Central Market.
Other typical dishes include Jāņu siers (traditional cheese with caraway seeds), vecrīga (a sweet pastry with cottage cheese), maizes zupa (rye bread pudding), and potato pancakes.
