Home to a myriad of colors and landscapes, Peru will take your breath away – and not just because of the high altitude. This is where many travelers transform to hikers, trekking for the best views in incredibly high altitudes. Retrace the steps of the Incas, marvel at a desert oasis, or try your hand at surfing. No matter where you go in Peru, you’ll encounter epic landscapes and mouthwatering food. And whether you visit for a week or a month, you’re guaranteed to leave with plenty of stories of adventure.

So much of what makes Peru amazing is outdoors which is why it’s best to avoid visiting between Mid-November and Mid-March – when the rain is at its heaviest. Instead, opt for shoulder season for optimal weather and fewer crowds.
April – May / September – October: These are the BEST times to hike The Inca Trail for mostly dry weather and smaller crowds. Because this is should season, you’ll be avoiding the peak season of tourism when prices are at their highest and sites at their busiest.
June – August: These are the most popular months to hike The Inca Trail. You’re almost guaranteed to avoid rain during these months, but note that the weather is cold (it’s winter in Peru) and you’ll encounter lots of travelers. You have to book your trek far in advance since only 500 permits are issued per day. I did the trek with Intrepid Travel and highly recommend them.

Peru has been named the best culinary destination for 7 years in a row and that accolade is deserved, thanks to a fusion of cultures that has resulted in flavorful and fresh dishes. You’ll want to pack your eating pants when visiting!
Don’t miss ceviche, the national dish of Peru consisting of raw seafood marinated in citrus and mixed with vegetables. It’s to-die for. Another popular dish is the lomo saltado, a hearty stew made with tender meat, vegetables, and fried potatoes and served with rice. Of course, don’t leave Peru without sampling Peruvian-Chinese food at a chifa or the country’s Japanese fusion as well.
Lastly, Peruvian coffee is some of the best in the world, despite the fact that it isn’t really exported. Drink your fair share while visiting and don’t forget to take a few bags home as well!
