Welcome to Taiwan, where tradition meets modern, beautiful nature meets urban jungle, and good food is always nearby. High-speed trains whisk visitors from one city to the next with remarkable efficiency, but busses to smaller towns and a lush countryside are also available. Whether you’re in Taiwan to eat, shop, explore, or all of the above, this small island nation packs a big punch.

Taiwan can easily be visited year round, thanks to its mostly temperate climate. Summer months (June – August) should be avoided due to a combination of humidity, crowds, and monsoons.
March – May: Spring in Taiwan is the best time to visit hands down. Temperatures are mild (mostly in the 70s Fahrenheit) and it’s the perfect time to see cherry blossoms and go on hikes. It’s not peak season either, so accommodation prices are generally reasonable.
September – November: Like Spring, Autumn in Taiwan is mild: fairly cool but with plenty of sunshine and little rain. It’s also not peak season, so prices should be low.
December – February: Winter in Taiwan is chilly but not freezing (except in the mountains), with daytime temperatures rarely dropping below the 40s F. Since it’s low season, it’s the cheapest time to visit, but be sure to pack layers.

In a country where “have you eaten?” is a greeting, it should come to no surprise that the Taiwanese love to eat – and they love to eat well. Here you’ll find vast night markets, decked out cafes, street food stalls, and so much more, with options available no matter what time your food craving strikes.
There’s no shortage of textures, flavors, and sizes to Taiwanese cuisine. Although Muslim travelers should exercise a bit of caution to avoid pork dishes, there are still plenty of halal(ish) options, with seafood, poultry, and beef heavily dominating the food scene.
The national dish is beef noodle soup, a flavorful comfort food made with braised beef, noodles, and veggies. Other popular dishes include pancakes (made of scallions and radish), Taiwanese fried chicken, and iron eggs (chewy quail eggs).
